Dunkwa-On-Offin: Wesley Methodist Church marks 130th anniversary

The Wesley Methodist Church at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region has marked 130 years of its existence.

At a thanksgiving service to climax the anniversary, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, paid glowing tribute to founding members for their enormous contributions towards the development and growth of Methodism in Dunkwa-On-Offin.

As part of the celebration, a new church building was also dedicated. The Wesley Methodist Church at Dunkwa-On-Offin started in 1890 with 15 people.

Church services were organised in the house of one of the members. With steady growth in membership, it became imperative to construct a shed to hold church activities.

In 1924, the foundation stone for construction of the church building was laid. The building was completed in 1927.

Eventually, a much larger hall was needed for church service so the then Dunkwahene, Nana Kofi Ashia offered land for the building of a new church.

Construction work began in 2001 and was completed in 2020. Currently, the church has a population of 1677. It has also established Methodist schools within the Dunkwa Municipality.

As part of the 130th anniversary, founding members of the church were honoured.

In a sermon, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo said though the over one hundred years journey of the church has not been smooth the Lord has sustained the church.

He called on all who are holding leadership positions in the church to serve selflessly.

The 130th anniversary celebration was under the theme “130 years of Methodism in Dunkwa-On-Offin; the present, past and the future, prospects and challenges.
