A delegation of the European Union (EU) to Ghana on Wednesday, visited the Headquarters Northern Command at Camp Nyohini, Tamale. The visit led by Brigadier General J Deman (Rtd) was to work on proposals for future support to the Command.
Their visit was also to inquire some challenges faced by the Command with the aim of improving the security systems around the Northern borders.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Brigadier General M Essien welcomed the team and noted that the Military High Command is working assiduously to get the Ghana Armed Forces to a standard that would make it robust to counter threats in the sub-region.
GOC also added that troops under his Command need to be proactive to threats of terrorism and that would be dependent on their equipment state to ensure the northern borders are safe.
Brigadier General M Essien averred that there was a need for close collaboration with international partners such as the European Union since terrorism is a global threat. His focal areas for support included an improvement in infrastructure, equipment support and training support.
The EU delegation Team Leader, Brigadier General J Deman (Rtd) thanked the GOC, Brigadier General M Essien for the warm reception and assured him of their readiness and commitment to have a fruitful partnership.
He also pledged to make the EU aware of the challenges disclosed to the team and to suggest realistic ways to improve military operations in the North.
Brig Gen Essien entreated the team to help fast track requests to make the Accra Initiative fully operational.
