The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that arrests connected to the fatal attack on a military escort convoy in Binduri in the Upper East Region have increased to 21, as security operations intensify in pursuit of the remaining suspects.
The incident took place on Monday, April 27, 2026, when a convoy carrying about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga was ambushed by unidentified gunmen who opened heavy fire. Three civilians were killed, and one other person was injured.
In a press statement released on the day of the incident, the military confirmed that the escort convoy had been ambushed by unidentified attackers. Troops were able to repel the assault, leading to the deaths of seven of the assailants. In the course of the pursuit, security personnel recovered a G3 automatic rifle, two loaded magazines containing 20 rounds each, and an additional 176 rounds of ammunition from a suspect who had fled to a mosque.
Speaking on Channel One News, the Acting Director-General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain (Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, stated that the number of suspects in custody has risen to 21.
Captain Arhin noted that investigations are still ongoing and warned the public against assaulting security personnel carrying out their official duties.
“Please do not attack the military, especially when they are on official duty. When you do that, needless lives may be lost because we need to protect ourselves and carry out the assignments we have been given,” she said.
The Armed Forces expressed their deepest sympathies to the families of the civilians who lost their lives and wished the injured a swift recovery. They also indicated that they are collaborating with other security agencies to restore stability in the area and prevent further attacks. The statement was signed by Captain Arhin.
