The Global Foundation for Community  Development, GFCD, has organized a Sustainability Leadership Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, for students of the University for Development Studies, UDS, in Tamale.

The Summit, which is the first of it’s kind in the country seeks to orient, expose and train the youth to champion various forms of activities and projects in shaping their communities towards sustainable development.

The Executive Director of GFCD, Sharon Rose Aggrey, advised the  students and the youth at large to rise up to the occasion and champion the 17 SDGs for total development.

Joyce Kantam Kolamong reports that the maiden edition of the Sustainability Leadership Summit is a collaboration between the Global Foundation for Community Development and the Local Union of Ghana Students,  NUGS, of UDS, Tamale.

The Summit which brought together students from various faculties centered conversations around the 17 SDGs.

Following the launching and the rolling out of the SDGs, also referred to as Agenda 2030, there have been many forms of misconceptions and negative opinions and ideas about the SDG Agenda.

Therefore the Summit is geared towards training and polishing the mindsets of young people especially with interest in sustainability,  community service and development with the focus of changing the attitudes of people towards the path of volunteerism and development.

Miss Sharon Rose Aggrey said leadership starts with the youth, that is why they  and her outfit is taking the summit to the doorsteps of tertiary institutions, Senior and junior high schools as well as the general public. She said the goal is to  whip up their interest in pursuing the course of the SDGs .

The NUGS Director of Communications, who is a level 500 Medical Student, Adwoa Safo, said though the youth are given the platforms to speak out, more needs to be done to showcase their ability. She said the exposure and the support are key in pushing them up.

Seasoned Speakers from various academia took the students through topics such as the Role of the Youth in Climate Action, Sustainability and Me, Strategies in Unlocking Business Ideas and Time Management.

The Sustainability Leadership Summit was on the theme “Developing The Right Attitude and Mindset to Become Ambassadors for the Sustainable Development Goals”.
