Saapkuli in the Savelugu Municipality, of the Northern Region, was one of the largest slave markets in the 17th century. It was once a commercial hub that linked the north to the south, for flourishing trade in slaves and kola nuts. GBC’s Northern regional correspondent walks us back in time, for some history of the slave trade, a prominent remnant of which is the ancient Boabab tree that once stood in the largest slave market in Dagbon. Many say the area must be developed into a tourist site to preserve the heritage for future generations and also generate revenue for development.
