Assistant Divisional Officer II,  Alex Ken Nartey, of the Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service, says the Service will soon undertake an audit of fire hydrants nationwide. This he said has become necessary as fire hydrants which are critical to fire fighting, are faced with encroachment.

Speaking to GBC News, in Accra, Mr. Nartey also identify fire hydrants that are not in good conditions.

“In Ghana people have encroached on our hydrants, recently at  Kantamanto fire for instance, we found a hydrant in someone’s shop. Not close to the shop, or near the shop, inside the shop. It begs you to question who gives permit for people to mount their shops at places like that. We have to be each other’s keeper know that where this person is building inadvertently  affects you because he is  building on the source of water that can help us to help you”

“The inspection board will go round to mark all the hydrants maybe if it’s not functioning what we can do to get it back .

Assistant Divisional Officer II,  Alex Ken Nartey, also debunked the assertion that the Fire Service arrives at fire scene without water.

He said the Fire Service Personnel are well trained professionals who will not toy with lives and property they have been trained to safe during fire outbreaks.
