The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has highlighted Ghana’s growing leadership in global forest restoration and sustainable land management at the 21st Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21) in New York, USA.
Addressing delegates at the international gathering, the Minister, who is leading Ghana’s delegation to the forum, said Ghana has made significant progress in reversing forest degradation through bold national initiatives and strong citizen participation.
According to him, Ghana’s flagship Tree-for-Life (T4L) Reforestation Initiative has, within the past year, mobilized citizens, schools, businesses, and local communities to plant more than 30 million trees across the country through reforestation, enrichment planting, trees-on-farms, and assisted natural regeneration programmes.
Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed that the government is preparing to launch another nationwide planting exercise beginning June 2, 2026, with a target of planting an additional 30 million trees during the rainy season.
The Minister stressed that Ghana’s forest restoration efforts go beyond tree planting, noting that the country has integrated climate-smart agroforestry practices into cocoa production under the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme.
He explained that the programme promotes the planting of native trees within cocoa farms to improve productivity, strengthen farmer resilience, and generate measurable carbon benefits.
Highlighting Ghana’s achievements in sustainable timber trade, the Minister announced that Ghana became the first African country and only the second country globally after Indonesia to issue a Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) license in August 2025.
He said the milestone demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the timber sector, ensuring that all timber exports to Europe are verified as legally and sustainably sourced.
“That is transparency. That is accountability. That is Ghana leading by example,” he declared.
Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah further noted that government has intensified efforts to combat illegal logging and illegal mining while exploring innovative financing mechanisms to support forest protection and restoration.
He added that Ghana’s forest policies and interventions remain aligned with the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2030.
The Minister called on the international community to collaborate with Ghana in safeguarding forests and protecting the environment for future generations.
The 21st Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests is being held in New York from May 11 to May 15, 2026, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and environmental experts to discuss sustainable forest management and climate resilience.
