From Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Razak Baba and Georgina Serwaa Agyei report that the 65th Independence Day Parade saw five cadet and five non-Cadet Senior High Schools, 10 Public and Private JHS and volunteer Groups from Greater Kumasi and Contingents from the Security Services participating in the Independence Parade at the Jubilee Park.
The Parade Commander, Captain Jude Adu Mensah of the 4th Garrison of the Ghana Armed Forces led the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah to inspect the Parade as Reviewing Officer.
The cultural troupe from the Centre for National Culture, Kumasi were on hand to entertain the audience to splendid cultural performances. Some of the dignitaries who graced the occasion were the Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia, representing Asantehene, wife of the Asantehene, Lady Julia, the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Sam Pyne and regional heads of the Security Services.
Independence Day Anniversary Message
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah read the President’s Independence Anniversary Message. He paid tribute to the forebears of the country’s freedom struggle for their sense of unity and patriotism.
He underscored the need for Ghanaians to ”eschew all tendencies that have the potential to retard the gains made so far as a nation”.
Schools which performed exceptionally at the parade were honored. Opoku Ware SHS was adjudged the Best Cadet School, Armed Forces SHS received Best Non-Cadet School Award, while KNUST SHS was awarded for winning the 65th Independence Day Quiz.
