Indigenes of Gane in Nabdam tango with private developer

By Peter Agengre.

Our Upper East Regional Correspondent Peter Agengre reports that residents of Gane area in the Nabdam District are up in arms over what they say is an attempt by a private developer to block their animals from having access to water from a dam. They say they want work on the piece of land near the water source stopped.

The angry people claim that the property in question is public land and are accusing a section of their leaders of colluding with the developer to continue building despite their concerns about deprivation.

“We are not against the sale of the land to the private developer but against the construction method”.

The people have threatened to use every means available to protect their properties if the government including the District Chief Executive refuses to take action.

More than 20 hectares of the land area according to the people have been earmarked for a project unknown to them. Their concern is that the fence wall for the project has blocked all the roads their animals and people use to the dam. The dam according to them was constructed in the 1980’s and has been their source of livelihood.

Assembly Member for the Zanlerigu Electoral Area, Mr. Maxwell Divom has observed that their animals would not have a clear path to the water source if the private developer continued. He has also appealed to the youth to exercise restraint so that they can use dialogue to resolve the issue.

At the time of filing this report, all efforts to speak to the private developer has not been successful.
