Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has been sworn-into Office as Chief Justice of the Republic. She takes over from Justice Anin Yeboah who retired last month. Justice Torkornoo becomes the third female to occupy the enviable position after Justices Georgina Wood and Sophia Akuffo.

The swearing-in of Justice Torkornoo follows the approval of her nomination by Parliament this month.

President Akufo-Addo said appointing her was not a difficult task as she possesses the required qualities to lead the Apex Court. The President expressed confidence in the new Chief Justice’s abilities and pledged his personal support in fulfilling her duties.

Prior to her appointment, Justice Gertrude Essaba Torkornoo, has had a distinguished career spanning several years, from the High Court, the Appeal Court and her most recent appointment at the Supreme Court in 2019.

President Akufo-Addo was optimistic that Justice Torkornoo’s more than 19 years’ experience will come to bear as she leads the Judicial arm of government.

The President assured her that he will be a dependable partner to ensure the Judiciary and the Executive work to entrench the rule of law.
