KPC fumes; blames top officials for lack of peace in Bawku

By: Peter Agengre

“We want the Ghanaian public to know that the seemingly unending violence in Bawku is not because the security forces are not capable or incompetent. It’s not because the people of Bawku are too stubborn and are impossible to deal with. It is because of orders from above and those orders must stop” Prof. John Azumah fumes.

The Kusaug People’s Congress (KPC) in the Upper East Region has expressed grave concern about the security situation in the Bawku Municipality.

At a press briefing in Bawku, president of KPC Professor John Azumah commended the indigenes and the youth of the municipality for heeding to the curfew instructions and also ensuring that peace is returns to the area.

According to the Kusaug People’s Congress, KPC, the Bawku Municipality has not known peace for the past two years. This has made life unbearable in the area, while others have deserted the town.

President of the Kusaug People’s Congress, Professor John Azumah said many public sector workers have fled the town and economic activities have stalled. Professor Azumah wanted to know why people keep dying every week despite the security measures put in place.

“Bawku has been under curfew for almost 24 months. Many private businesses in Bawku have closed. Several public institutions and offices are barely functioning” Mr. John Azumah cried.

Professor Azumah has also accused the security and law enforcing agencies of not doing enough to restore calm in the area. He cited the just ended limited voter registration exercise which could not be continued in the Bawku Municipality as a failure on the part of the security to be on top of their job.

“How can you compel the youth to go on peace walk when there is no peace in Bawku? How can you give orders that the market should be integrated when you could not provide security for electoral officers to undertake voter registration exercise?” Prof. Azumah asked.

The Kusaug People’s Congress is made up of all Kusaasi’s from the Bawku Municipal, Bawku West District, Binduri, Garu, Tempani and Pusiga Districts.

According to them, there is some silence from all sectors of Ghanaian society which does not alter well for the people. They have raised allegations that there are some powers from above that regulate the activities of the security forces in the Bawku municipality.

KPC has however expressed commitment to ensure that peace returns to the Bawku Township.
