Many feared trapped in building collapse at Akyem Batabi

Rescue operations are underway by personnel from the Akim Oda Divisional Police Command, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ambulance Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to save lives of about 20 persons trapped after the collapse of a 3-storey church building at Akyem Batabi in the Asene Manso Akroso District of the Eastern Region.

The building, belonging to the Church of Prosperity led by Prophet Akoa Isaac came down around 2pm yesterday when some members of the church were resting in the building after a prayer session.

Reports say about 65 worshippers were in the building at the time of the collapse. Four people, as of 4:30 pm had been rescued and one dead body retrieved from the wreckage.

A bulldozer is on site to move the wreckage so that lives could be saved.

Voices of those trapped inside could be heard with some screaming for help.
