Senior Programme Manager, Media Foundation for West Africa, MFWA, Muheeb Saed, is advocating a national dialogue among stakeholders in the media industry, as well as the judiciary and the security agencies to come out with policies that can address abuses meted out to journalists in their line of work.
He said impunity against journalists still persist as perpetrators usually go unpunished and are highly motivated to do so.
Mr. Saed, was speaking to GBC News as Ghana joins the rest of the World to commemorate International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against journalists today.
Mr. Saed said the Day presents an opportunity for Ghana to reflect and assess responses to attacks. He also encouraged journalists and media houses to pursue cases of attacks to its logical conclusion.
The GJA Journalists of the Year, Erastus Asare Donkor, said there are bottle necks in attempts of journalists to seek justice. This, he said, has discouraged many journalists from pursuing justice.
Mr. Donkor also recommended that the National Media Commission, NMC, is strengthened.
Security Analyst, Richard Kumadoe said promoting the security of journalists calls for an all-hands-on deck approach. For him journalists must take issues of their personal security serious.
