As the United Nations and the global community gather in Egypt to discuss mitigating measures against the earth’s climate phenomenon and life on Earth, the government of Ghana, through its agencies, is also implementing various strategies to reduce the impact on Ghana to the barest minimum.
It is against this backdrop that the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, has taken the lead in creating enhanced public awareness about the reality of the problem to rally everyone toward the national goal.
The government of Ghana is heavily represented at the ongoing global forum on climate change at Sham El-Sheikh in Egypt under COP27, which is part of the world’s efforts at finding mitigating measures against the rising level of temperature that the UN and its agencies describe as a threat to life on the earth. Even before this world conference, President Akufo-Addo stated the position of the country, indicating that Ghana is playing its part to reduce the causes of rising temperatures.
It is pursuant to this national commitment that the Asokwa Municipal directorate of the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, has initiated actions to enhance public awareness about the reality of the climate change issue and the negative ramifications on life which Ghana and Ghanaians are no exemption.
Led by its Municipal Director, Mr. Eric Akosah, staff at the directorate walked and later positioned themselves at strategic portions along the main road in the Asokwa Municipality.
It was believed that with the heavy volume of vehicular and human movement on the stretch from Asokwa through Ahinsan, Atonsu, Kyrapatre to Fabi Junction, the attention of the many users of the road would be caught for improved awareness creation. Some of the NADMO staff are also stationed at the most prominent Traffic intersections at the Kumasi Mall and the erstwhile Kumasi Brewery.
They held placards with various messages such as “Climate Change Means No Food, No Love and No Pleasure”, “Climate Change is Real”, “Stop Sand Winning” and “It is Time to Stop Global Warming.”
The NADMO staff later took advantage of the available Communication Centre at the New Agogo Community Market at Atonsu t broadcast their climate change awareness creation messages to the traders, hawkers, and customers. A member of the Asokwa Municipal NADMO Operations Team, Madam Lucy Norshie, addressed the market community.
“There certain causes of the changes in even the air we breathe. Among them is felling of trees indiscriminately. Remember that when the last tree dies, the last man will also die,” she stressed.
The Municipal NADMO Director, Mr. Eric Akosah-Yiadom, spoke to GBCNews about the rationale of the initiative.
He explained, “this programmes is to create awareness about climate change in our Municipality, educate them on the effects, the causes, and then how it impacts on global warming on our environment.”
