The Navrongo Central Prisons in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region is said to be overstretched, as it accommodates more than it can take.

The cell, which originally accommodates 80 inmates, is now housing three times the number, that is 240 inmates.

This is causing serious congestion, coupled with other diseases and poor ventilation.

This came to light when the Women’s Ministry of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Bolgatanga donated food items to them. Food items donated include gari, rice and cooking oil.

Receiving the items on behalf of the inmates, DSP Francis Deku, who is in charge of Operations and Religious Affairs of the Navrongo Central Prisons said facilities are overstretched due to the increasing number of inmates.

He indicated that though budget allocation to the prisons comes on time, it is woefully inadequate.

DSP Deku said overcrowding affects the quality of life of prisoners and accounts for inhumane conditions in the cells.

He appealed to benevolent organisations, religious bodies and government to come to the aid of the Prison.

The Bolgatanga Seventh-Day Adventist Church Women’s Ministry Director, Felicia Baafi, pledged the group’s readiness to support the inmates of the Navrongo Central Prisons physically and spiritually.
