A 26-year-old commercial motor rider is battling for his life after he was shot in a fresh attack in Nkwanta South on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The victim, Bright Nkpah, was ambushed by unknown gunmen while travelling from Nkwanta towards Odomi-Challa. He was in the company of other road users when the attackers opened fire.

The motive for the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown. The incident is believed to be linked to the ongoing conflict in the area.

Mr. Nkpah sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving emergency treatment at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital. Medical staff say they are working to stabilise his condition.

The latest shooting has heightened fear in Nkwanta South, as the fresh conflict claimed a life of 28 year-old food vendor and left his two year old baby injured last Sunday.

Residents say parts of the town have been deserted as people take precautionary measures. School activities have also been disrupted due to security concerns.

Security has since been tightened. Joint police and military patrols have been deployed to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security services.
