The Northern Regional Police Command has begun investigations into boxes of ammunition that were seized near Bimbilla in the northern region. According to the Command, although it may not have conclusive evidence, the seized ammunition could be linked to the clashes at Nakpache in the Yendi municipality which led to the death of local Chief Imam.

Over the weekend, four boxes containing 1,500 pieces of ammunition were seized at Bimbilla by the Formed Police Unit (FPU). The ammunition was concealed in a sack and tied to a motorbike that was ferried into the region. The owner of the sack is yet to be arrested as he fled upon sensing danger.

Public Relations officer of the Regional Police Command, DSP Yussif Tanko in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana in Tamale, said another person had earlier been arrested with 44 pieces of cartridges, adding that they suspect the ammunition were being used to fuel the conflict in the area. DSP Tanko said security patrols have been beefed up in the area and warned trouble makers to stay away or they will be dealt with ruthlessly.

Meanwhile, the Kampakuya Na, Yakubu Abdulai Andani, has diffused mounting tension in the area. He met chiefs from the Gbungbalga and Nakpache communities and expressed concern about the recent clash.

He said conflicts are having a negative toll on the region and destroying its image to the wider world. He therefore entreated the chiefs to be proactive and address issues before they become full blown conflicts.
