Parliament approves US$ 86Million to purchase Armoured Vehicles

Parliament has approved a loan of Eighty-Six Million, One Hundred and Twenty Thousand United States Dollars (US$ 86, 120,000.00 Million) to purchase Armoured Vehicles for The Ghana Armed Forces.

The loan is to enable Government of Ghana to secure funding to procure Armoured vehicle and ammunition for the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwil in moving the motion assured Ghanaians that, The Ghana Army is well prepared to deal with any threat within or without.

According to him, “The Army had long promulgated the establishment of 154 and 155 Armoured Regiment in Sunyani and Tamale respectively to expand the military’s capacities of dealing with contemporary national threats.

The Ghana Armed forces (GAP) has been primarily responsible for the defence of the State as enshrined in Article 210(3) of the 1992 Constitution.

Additionally, the Ghana Armed Forces is involved in internal security operations with other sister security services for the safety of the general public.

Such operations include Operation Gong-Gong which is geared towards maintaining peace in the northern part of the country, Operation Clam Life at Donkorkyina in the Bono Region, which seeks to curb incidents of armed robbery and other violent crimes and Exercise Ogbangame Express which seeks to fight maritime crimes in Ghana’s
territorial waters.

More recently, GAF personnel were also tasked to support the Police and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Operation COVID Safety to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

In addition to its traditional roles, GAF has carved an enviable reputation for itself and the country as global peacekeepers.

This is evident by the number of GAF personnel posted at various United Nations peacekeeping theatres around the world.

The Ghana Armed Forces has thus over the years performed supportive roles towards
the political, social and economic spheres of national development.

The Ghana Army is the main ground warfare organisational branch of the military with the mandate of defending the land borders of the country against any threats.
