A 35-year-old mentally challenged man said to have murdered his 94-year-old grandmother at Domponiase in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region has been gunned down by the Upper West Akim Police Command of the Ghana Police Service.

Some residents say the suspect, whose name was given as Paa Kwesi, was chained at a prayer camp around Adeiso before he fled home on Sunday, August 20, to commit the heinous crime.

According to reports, the 35-year-old mentally ill man pulled the chain off at the prayer camp and dashed to the family house.

On arrival at the premises, he murdered the aged grandmother, Maame Yaa Ameyawo, and tried attacking his cousin, Agbesi, who wanted to rescue the old grandmother.

The police were called in to save the situation.

On arrival at the scene, the suspect turned the attack on them.

However, the police responded with a gun by shooting him in the leg, resulting in his death.

The two bodies have since been deposited at the Nsawam Government Hospital.

The injured cousin of the victim is also at the same facility receiving health care.
