The Director of Communications at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), William Boateng, has revealed that until recently, power supply had been stable in the country.

He made this known on the GTV Breakfast Show on May 17, 2022.

The ECG was incorporated in 1963 and became a limited company when shares were first sold in the firm in February 1997. However, the company is still owned by the government.

In recent times, the Electricity Company of Ghana has requested tariff increases by 148% for 2022 and with 7.6% average adjustments between the periods of 2023 to 2026. This, according to ECG, is due to the gap between the actual cost recovery tariff and PURC-approved tariffs as well as the cost of completed projects.

Upon addressing the issue, the Director of Communications for the company said, “until recently, let’s be frank power has been stable in this country. You heard from my Hon. sector Minister say that ‘Yedum Asie sie’, meaning we are switching it off to fix it. We are talking about investments to bare on our systems and how do we invest in these systems if we do not pull the old ones down and fix the new ones.”

He continued, “yes we are doing a lot of projects and the rains set in recently and it came with serious rainstorms, especially the havoc the rain caused affects power supply. That is why I repeat that we are a developing country and we should exercise patience, especially when communiqués are put out there we should not be too quick to conclude without listening to us.”

He concluded by pleading with the public to be patient with the Electricity Company of Ghana.
