A former Minister for Power and Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East Constituency, Dr Kwabena Donkor, has highly commended management of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), for its decision to fine board members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), GH¢5.8m.

The Pru East lawmaker thus described the decision by the utilities regulatory body to fine ECG board members as ‘extremely refreshing’.

Dr Donkor, commenting on the issue in an interview, noted that the fine imposed on the board members was extremely refreshing because they failed to take accountability for the company’s decisions.

“For me that is extremely refreshing. Extremely refreshing because I also rank the state enterprises committee of parliament and good governance has been noticed more by its absence in a number of state-owned enterprises. Board members do not take responsibility for decisions of the entities that they superintend over. And so, I am very excited about that,” he stated.

The PURC has levied a substantial fine of GHS5,868,000 on the ECG board members who served from the start of the year until March 18, 2024.

This punitive action was a result of their breach of Regulation 39 of L.I. 2413, which mandates prior notification to consumers before any disruption in power supply.

The fine has impacted several individuals, including Keli Gadzekpo, who stepped down as Board Chair on March 26, and the incumbent ECG Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Mahama.
