Residents of opetekwei, part of Dansoman in Accra, have expressed worry about the poor state of roads in the area. According to them, the road becomes very muddy and unmotorable whenever it rains.
As a result, drivers are reluctant to ply the roads.
The residents have cited the pambros salt pond located in the area as party the cause of their woes. According to them the ponds make the area waterlog thereby compounding the problem each time it rains.
A student living in the area, said due to the situation, he sometimes misses classes.and even when he makes an effort, his shoes get stuck in the mud.
“The issue of bad road is a very big problem here. I am unable to go to school whenever it rains because the roads get all muddy. when I walk through it to school I get dirty and my shoes get stuck in the mud, due to this I miss classes whenever it rains we are hoping that this issue will be solved”.
A trader added that due to the bad nature of the roads, drivers refuse to ply the road.
“You know the road here are very bad. Sometimes you pick a taxi and they just leave you anywhere and you have to struggle with your luggages”
Speaking to Radio Ghana, the assembly member for the area, Andrews Samini attributed the poor state of the roads to some residents who dump refuse into the drains. He said before he assumed office, there used to be mangroves in the area, that contributed to the floods, but he mobilized the people to cut them out.
“Each year I organize residents to dredge the ponds. The residents are fond of dumping refuse in the ponds. It is a typical Ghanaian character that we are trying to solve”.
As the rains continue, it is hoped that government will come to the aid of the residents.
