The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has appealed to President Akufo Addo to as a matter of urgency address challenges emanating from the introduction of the E-Levy, the new Tax regime which began May 1, 2022.

According to the Agents, they are not against the introduction of the E-Levy, however, there is a need to properly sensitize the public for mutual benefit. While commending the government for its digitization drive such as the Mobile Money Interoperability which has improved Mobile Money Transactions, the Association pledged its commitment to support the government’s agenda to raise revenue for development.

The General Secretary of the Association, Evans Otumfuo made these remarks when they paid a courtesy call on President Akufo Addo at the Jubilee House.

Government in its 2022 Budget and Policy Statement announced its intention to tax electronic transactions, hence the introduction of the E-Levy.

After some back and forth, the E-Levy kicked off May 1, 2022 amidst some concerns.

It is for this reason that the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana were at the seat of the government to introduce the Association to the President and also support the government in its quest to generate revenue for development.

The General Secretary of the Association, Evans Otumfuor speaking on behalf of the Association applauded the ”government’s digitisation agenda” which has seen improvement in activities especially with electronic payment.

They cited the Mobile Money Interoperability, the QR code and the Electronic Renewal of NHIS Cards which has positively helped industry players especially Momo Operators with a surge in transactions. He said ”while the Association supports the government’s decision, there is the need for urgent measures to sensitize the public on the E-Levy”. He said the Association will partner the government in that regard.

President Akufo-Addolauded the efforts of the Mobile Money Agents for coming together as a group to champion a common goal. He pledged the government’s commitment to support the work of the agents as it employs a large number of the youth.

President Akufo-Addo said his government will work together with the Mobile Money Operators to suppress the incessant attacks on agents.
