Manasseh Azure – on death threats as a Journalist

Manasseh Azure Awuni, a freelance journalist has alleged that journalism in Ghana has not been safe in recent times. He joined the GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, May 5, 2022, for conversations about Press Freedom. Manasseh Azure, born Manasseh Azure Awuni, is a freelance investigative journalist who worked with Multimedia Group Limited in Accra, Ghana.

He is known for his controversial investigative and anti-corruption reports that have caused a national uproar and resulted in some government officials going to prison. According to Manasseh, “in the past, when I was doing a story or writing something the only concern was, is this true, is it factual, but now, is it safe is an overriding question and some of us have to be fully hard and daredevils to still continue to do the things we do”.

When it comes to Journalism in Ghana, Finances are mostly one of the reasons some Journalists mostly affiliate themselves with one political party, but according to Manasseh, finances have been a fraction of what Journalists face, but there are some Media Houses that do not have the courage to do all kinds of stories neither are they independent enough. He said “when I came here (GBC) I asked myself if I still stayed in GBC would I be able to do the things I have done recently?

Manasseh: “Never! That I can tell you for a fact and I am saying it on GTV that in an election year I wonder if the Editors in GBC would want me to do a story on Mahama and some of the things I have done even on my social media platform”. He continued by saying that “If you want to look at why certain things are not done, it is not because I have said it somewhere but GBC has a lot of quality in terms of the reporters and technical aspect and also have a lot of resources than other Media Houses”.
