Traders at the Mamobi market in Accra have called on the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to prioritize sanitation at various markets in the capital, Accra.

The traders who complained that they have endured selling under insanitary conditions due to lack of attention from relevant stakeholders, said they are scared of contracting diseases.

The traders made the appeal when GBC News visited some areas in Accra, to assess the sanitation situation. Upon arrival, the Nima market and Kwame Nkrumah Interchange area had refuse containers overflowing and the gutters choked.

The Odaw River had refuse floating in it and along it’s banks.Traders at the Mamobi market were equally worried about filth that had engulfed the market. In an interaction with them, they called on the authorities to frequently empty the containers in the markets.

“The refuse which are left uncollected smell bad and poses a threat to our health. My major problem is about the authorities, I believe that the structures are not working.

The traders also blamed government for the lack of enforcement on sanitation bye-laws.

“Accra will be the cleanest city, but those who are suppose to do it, there is no enforcement to make sure they are doing it, I can tell you that if you should walk from Mamobi Market to Gutter, there is no dust bin on the way”.

President Akufo-Addo in April 2017, declared his intention to make Accra the cleanest city on the continent. If what was witnessed in some parts of the capital, Accra is anything to go by, then citizens must be sensitized to their role.
