Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched the Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) and a National Command Centre for the National Petroleum Authority, NPA.
The ECTS and the Command Centre are expected to improve the efficiency of NPA in the monitoring of Bulk Roads Vehicles (BRVs) across the country.
Vice President Bawumia used the occasion to charge the NPA to leverage on technology and collaborate with National Security to address illicit activities such as the smuggling of petroleum products at the downstream sector.
He announced that government is exploring ways to digitize the distribution of premix fuel.
The Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) and the National Command Centre will among other things improve standards and control the distribution of petroleum products in an efficient manner.
It will also enable the NPA monitor the movement of Petroleum products.
Vice President Bawumia while commending the NPA for this initiative called for stronger collaboration to eliminate illicit activities such as smuggling as the country loses about 200 million annually due to these nefarious activities.
He asked the Authority to leverage on technology and digitize their operations.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Alhassan Tampuli said lack of an effective tracking over the years has cost the nation about ¢43million loss in revenue.
He noted that the tracking system and the command sector will go a long way to bring efficiency in the downstream sector.
Deputy Minister of Energy in charge of Petroleum, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam in a remark said government is working assiduously to improve infrastructure which will see other means of transporting Petroleum products aside road usage.
