Government through the National Communications Authority (NCA), is in talks with Benin and Gambia to establish a bilateral agreement to operate the ECOWAS Free Roaming Services.

This will enable Ghanaians to access free roaming services in these countries.

Already, Ghana has begun the initiative with Cote d’Ivoire and has concluded discussions on the same with Togo. These came to the fore when Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia launched the rebranded Vodafone to Telecel.

Dr Bawumia commended Telecel for choosing to invest in Ghana and expand their network to bring more innovation into the telecommunications space, a testament to the conducive business environment created over the past few years.

Evolving from Ghana Telecom, One Touch, to Vodafone Ghana, the telecom giant will now be known as Telecel Ghana, being the majority shareholder of Ghana Telecom Company Limited.

Telecel Ghana is part of the Telecel Group, a top-tier provider of digital and telecommunications solutions across the African Continent.

Vice President Bawumia said telecommunication is central to the aspiration of digitising government deliverables as it plays a pivotal role in shaping the modern society the government wants to build to bridge distances, connect people, and empower communities.

He noted that over the years, the number of rural telephony sites, which are aimed at promoting digital inclusion and reducing the digital gap, has ‘’increased from 78 in 2016 to 1,010 as at February 2024 and an additional 1,006 sites are underway’’.

Dr. Bawumia urged Telecel to continue to equip the youth through their Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Group CEO of Telecel, Moh Damush, explained that Ghana was chosen for the partnership on merit.

The Chief Executive Officer of Telecel, Patricia Obo-Nai, noted, ‘’the company has maintained the vision of touching lives, adding that this rebranding will bring value for money for customers.’’
