Government has maintained the Producer Price of Cocoa for the 2018/2019 season at GH₵7,600.00 (Seven Thousand Six Hundred Ghana Cedis) a tonne.
This was announced at the celebration of the 2018 World Cocoa Day by the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Osei Afriyie Akoto in Accra.
He mentioned the drastic drop in the price of the commodity on the world market as the main cause for maintaining the price.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto challenged local processors to endeavour to make cocoa products less expensive.
This, he said, will not only promote local consumption, but ultimately help government to achieve its objective of promoting the consumption of cocoa products locally.
Some Cocoa farmers who spoke to Radio Ghana were not surprised at the turn of events. They claimed it was to be expected because of the low performance of cocoa on the world market.
