Ghana recorded about three billion dollars from remittances transferred into the country by citizens in the diaspora in 2018. Director of the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Presidency, Akwasi Ababio, observed that the inflow was more than revenue generated from exported resource like gold, cocoa, among others. He said more is received from donor countries as aid and it is time that is recognised with policies geared towards getting streams of income coming into the country.

Mr Ababio was speaking on the side-lines of the opening of the three- day regional workshop to harness the effective use of migrant remittances in the sub-region for socio-economic development.

The meeting organised by the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) in collaboration with other development partners is expected to generate effective regulation, leverage on the use of technology and improve access to funds among other interventions to reduce the high cost of remittance in the sub region.
