Traders at Kejetia Market in Kumasi have reiterated their calls for the provision of separate meters at their shops.

They argue that the current system where the Management of the market collects money from them to pay electricity bills, when they do not know the power they consume individually, is killing their businesses.

The traders are of the view that if they have their own meters they will take steps to reduce power consumption and cut down on their electricity bills. In order to compel the Management of the market to take action, the traders have started wearing red bands and have also threatened to stage a massive demonstration if their demands are not met by Monday, September 11, 2023.

The President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders Nana Akwasi Prempeh said when the PURC announced the second quarter tariff adjustment the traders paid about GH¢640,0000 Cedis light bill a month and when the third quarter review was announced the bill went up to GH¢776,000 a month. He said the best solution to the issue is to allow the traders to have their own meters.
