Policeman in trouble for allegedly leading robbery gang

A policeman stationed at Chianain in the Kasena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, has been arrested and detained by the District Police Command for allegedly leading a gang to rob people of their monies, mobile phones and personal belongings.

A police source, which confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times here yesterday, indicated that the suspect and seven accomplices, who were on the run, robbed the victims at the Bolga-Navrongo Motor Road, near the Notre Dame Senior High School, on Friday dawn, at gunpoint.

According to the police source, the victims reported their ordeal to the police patrol team and showed the team the direction of the gang, leading to the arrest of Lance Corporal Ndebugre Asaah.

The source said when the policeman was grabbed, and interrogated by the police, he claimed he was also a victim of the robbery, but it was discovered that his phone and motorcycle were not taken from him, contradicting his statement.

The alleged robber, who is currently in police custody to assist in investigations, has been identified as Lance Corporal Ndebugre Asaah with number 48430 stationed at Chiana, on snap check barrier duties at Navrongo, near the spot of the arrest.

His dress was very dirty and his cap engulfed with particles of dried leaves, an indication that he was operating from the bush.

The victims of the robbery include 42-year-old driver, Asah Stephen, who was robbed of GH₵ 260, and a mobile phone, Kwaku Badu, 42, driver, who was robbed of GH₵6,000 and a mobile phone, and Yakubu Wudragu, 23, also a driver, who was robbed of 100,000 CFA , GH₵ 100 and mobile phone.

Meanwhile in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, some residents of the area and people who use the Bolgatanga-Navrongo road, indicated that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred in the area.

They commended the police for the arrest, but asked the police to intensify efforts to ensure security in the area.
