A Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Habibu Tijani says in order for the African Union to thrive, individuals especially the youth need to eschew divisive tendencies that promote conflicts on the continent.
Personnel from the Ghana National Cadet Corps, dressed in their navy green uniform were joined by the Cadet Corps from Labone Senior High school to participate in the maiden edition of the parade.
They went through their drills as the flag of Ghana and the AU flag were hoisted.Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Habibu Tijani, who was also the reviewing officer for the parade reiterated the importance of the role of the youth in the development of the continent. He touted some initiatives government has put in place to empower the youth.
Mr. said” I wish to make a special appeal to the leadership of the various youth organizations in the country to cease the opportunity that the Africa Union Day provides and commemorate it every year, as we do on Republic Day, Independence Day and other national days”
Coordinator General of the National Cadet Corps Nicholas Amarteifio appealed to government to ensure that the event is made a “national occasion”.
General Secretary of the All African Students Union Peter Kodjie said “Ghana must lead the way in the celebration of such historic events”.
Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Youth and Students of the Continent and the AU. The Deputy Minister laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Ghana, after which a minute of silence was observed in honour of the departed souls who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the continent.
