The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to set aside some teacher recruitment slots for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

He gave the directive during a visit to an examination centre in Sefwi Wiawso, where candidates were preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to the Minister, the decision is part of efforts to promote inclusion and equal opportunities in Ghana’s education system. He said his resolve was strengthened after learning that visually impaired persons are also working as teachers.

Mr. Iddrisu instructed the GES to allocate a percentage of future recruitment opportunities to qualified teachers with disabilities, stressing the need to create space for them in the system.

He also raised concerns about unpaid teacher allowances, including car maintenance, transfer, and promotion allowances. He said the matter would be discussed with the Finance Ministry to find a solution.

The directive marks a step toward improving inclusivity, while also drawing attention to ongoing welfare challenges in the education sector.
