GES intensifies ‘back to school’ programme for teenage mothers and pregnant students

The Volta Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has intensified its campaign for teenage mothers and pregnant students, to return to school after childbirth.

The Girls Education Unit of the Directorate is also educating students on the effects of teenage pregnancy to help eliminate the menace among school girls.

Regional and District task forces will ensure effective and efficient implementation of the Back-to-School programme.

The Volta Regional Director of Education, Enyonam Amafuga, at a sensitisation forum for stakeholders in Ho, on the back-to-School programme, said the initiative has seen significant enrollment in schools.

According to her, about 800 pregnant students and teenage mothers who dropped out of school are back in the classroom to continue their education.

Madam Amafuga asked parents not to shirk their responsibility towards their wards.

Representatives of educational groups, professional bodies, security services, traditional leaders among others, pledged to create awareness on the Back-to-School programme in their communities to get more school drop-outs return to school.
