Tolla Basic School in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region is appealing for help after it was left without a roof after a rainstorm. Pupils and teachers of the school have since deserted the building because they have no place to sit and learn.

GBC’s news team in Bolgatanga reports that Tolla Basic School has a population of more than 320 pupils and nine teaching staff. When GBC’s Peter Agengre visited the school, he realized that no academic activity had taken place since 14th of June, 2022.

Neither a pupil nor teacher was present. The classrooms were completely naked with animal droppings taking over the entire building. Some children from nearby homes who saw the news team arrive run to them to share their frustrations.

”We are not in school today because there is not place for us to sit. We are exposed to the bad weather after the rain remove our school zinc. So our masters don’t come to school again,” a pupil told our reporter.

Just after some 20 minutes of GBC NEWS’ presence in the school, some children started gathering at the school either in their uniform or house attire. Perhaps because they had had enough of staying at home, while school was supposed to be in session.

Assembly Member of the Datoko Electoral Area, Mr. Elijah Bawolmazor called on the government through the district assembly and other benevolent organizations to come to the aid of the school.

“I am very much worried because this school will be taking part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination this year yet they are at home. I have followed up to the District Assembly but nothing seems to be working. So I am just sad about the predicament,” Elijah fumed.

Community members at the Chief’s palace were equally not happy about the situation at the school. They said the damaged roof by the rainstorm should be repaired for their children to return to school.
