End of semester examinations at the Tamale Technical University (TaTU) came to an abrupt end on Wednesday, May 10, 2023  following a sit down strike declared by the university’s branch of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG).

Executives of TUTAG are demanding the commitment of management to implement the end of service benefit using the one-month one-year served formula contained in conditions of service approved in August 2021.

The teachers are also demanding the payment of “all delayed allowances, including Internally Generated Fund related allowances.”

Addressing the media in Tamale, the Vice Chairman of TUTAG, Dr. Abdul-Malik Bawah, explained that teachers in the school have withdrawn all services including,  teaching, conducting end of semester examination, marking of scrips and other academic related work.

He stressed that, unless management honours the agreement begin implementation of the, members will remain on strike.

“TUTAG  is also considering legal action against the University. If management should proceed to implement the end of service benefit using any other formula other than the approved formula in our conditions of service,” he emphasised.

The development has affected more than six thousand students offering Degree, HND, Diploma and Intermediate programmes.

Some students who reported to school today to write their last papers were left disappointed as their teachers did not turn up to serve them examination papers.

The students later converged at the administration block of the school to protest against the treatment.

The Public Affairs Director of the University,  Osman Mubarik Abu, assured the students that, management is working with TUTAG to address their concerns and bring the strike to an end and allow examinations to resume.
