The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists wants government to immediately employ qualified but unemployed professionals to support in health facilities as the country battles the COVID-19 outbreak.

This is in the face of the increasing numbers of cases which the Association believes might overwhelm the current number of health professionals who may not be enough to contain the numbers.

A statement issued by the Association called for all safety requirements on testing at all centers to be put in place and for testing to be immediately expanded to at least each region and district capital. This, it said, will enable prompt testing of patients for treatment and management.

The Medical Laboratory scientists also want directions on the use of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) in the battle against COVID-19, especially when locally manufactured kits are available for validation and deployment.

They also called for a policy direction, especially concerning Medical Laboratory practice, to ensure that investments in the health sector promised by the President in his previous address do not go waste as the sector has been neglected over the years.
