Ghana Card registration in Ashanti Region ends today

The Ghana Card registration exercise officially ends today in the Ashanti Region.
The National Identification Authority, NIA, says selected Registration Centres across the region will continue to register applicants till Saturday, January 18.
The measure is to help cater for the adverse effects of the challenges encountered at some of the Registration Centres during the period of the exercise.
The Ghana Card registration exercise, which was expected to end on January 8 was extended by one more week by the NIA to make up for the initial registration difficulties.
A statement signed and issued by the Head of Corporate Affairs of the NIA, Francis Palmdet, gave the assurance that all the Registration Centres in the region will continue with the issuance of the Ghana Card to successful applicants until Wednesday, January  22.
Touching on disciplinary issues, the statement said the NIA has dismissed six of its registration officials who had earlier been interdicted for indulging in illegal practices related to the exercise
They are Martin Awatey, Commissioner of Oaths, Musah Alhassan, Registration Officer, and Philip Osei, Mobile Registration Workstation. The others are Alphonse Acquah-Djan and Alexander Larbi, all Commissioners for Oath.
This brings to 10 the number of NIA Registration officials dismissed so far for misconduct during the Ashanti registration exercise.
The statement, however, said one other interdicted official, Margaret Agyei, the Supervising Registration Officer for the New Suame Church of Pentecost Registration Centre has been exonerated of any offence after a thorough investigation into reports of misconduct. She has been reinstated with all her entitlements fully restored.
Meanwhile, long queues still remain at almost all the registration centres especially in Kumasi hours to the official end of the exercise with most of the applicants almost giving up any hope of having their turn to acquire the Ghana Card.
