The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service recorded three cases of Child Marriage nationwide last year as against 11, in 2017.

This is as a result of several strategies adopted to eliminate the act or reduce it to the barest minimum.

In an interview with the GBC in Koforidua, at a Child Marriage Validation Workshop, the National Coordinator of DOVVSU, Superintendent Evelyn Borbor said most cases of child marriage are not reported.

According to her, the cases reported to her department are classified and registered as forced marriage and the offence for giving out the young girl under 18 for such marriage is a misdemeanor.

The offender is charged ¢5,000.00 as penalty. She further stated that the one who marries the girl can be charged for defilement if the girl is below 16 years since the law of Ghana stipulates that a girl below the age of 18 cannot be married though she has sexual consent at 16 years.

Supt Borbor called for the support of Ghanaians to bring perpetrators to book.
