A 55-year-old man met his untimely death while trying to escape from the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Covid Center at Effia, near Sekondi. The deceased, Paulus Okine was referred to the Covid Center from the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department two days ago.

On August 18, 2021, a security man at the Covid Center reported that he spotted Okine leaving the facility. According to the security man, he enquired from Okine reasons for leaving the centre, but he warned him to stay away else, he would harm him. After a while, Okine was found dead near the Nurses’ Quarters close to the hospital.

Clinicians from the hospital have since confirmed the death and reported the case to the Sekondi District Police Command.

The Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Madam Justina Amo Yartey recounted the incident to GBC News’ Reporter Sandra Yankey in Sekondi. She said,

‘’When the issue was brought to the Hospital’s attention, we called the Police and together with our security, we went to the scene, we saw him dead, but we didn’t touch the body, until police arrived to give us a go ahead. The police gave us the go ahead to confirm that the person was dead, so we called our Rapid Response Team from the mortuary to take the body away’’.

Madam Amo Yartey further advised the public to observe the safety protocols because Covid is a real disease.
