A registered licensed dietician at the Accra Regional Hospital, Eyram King Dotse has revealed that some people who sell fruits inject formalin in them to keep them fresh for a longer period. He made this revelation earlier on GTV’s Breakfast Show during the health check segment.

Formalin which is commonly used as an industrial disinfectant, and as a preservative in funeral homes and medical labs, can also be used as a preservative in some foods and in products, such as antiseptics, medicines, and cosmetics. Severe exposure can cause death from throat swelling or from chemical burns to the lungs but according to the dietician, “most of the fruits being brought to the market now to preserve the fruits and maintain a certain value, one key thing they do is to inject fruit sweet, formalin into the fruits to keep them fresh just like it does to the skin of dead bodies”.

He continued by saying, “for example, Apple will still have a fresh look after several weeks instead of it being degraded”.

He explained that formalin when consumed can cause severe abdominal pains and also cancer which can lead to death.
