After a woman gives birth, there are a lot of myths that surround her ability or inability to look good. If she grows lean, people say her husband is not catering for her and so the mothers and grandmothers who have gone through in some instances six baby births, come up with all kinds of food recipes for new mothers to help them look good and also get adequate breastmilk supply for the newborn. However, the post-natal period is bereft of its own issues.

The breast milk recipes include soup, mashed kenkey, and in some circumstances corn and groundnut. According to experts, in this case mothers and grannies, it helps produce enough milk.

Explaining the myth of corn and groundnut on the GTV Breakfast Show, on April 13, 2022, a Pediatrician, Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye said the corn and groundnut recipe does not necessarily produce breast, but, rather the relaxation bit.

Dr. Boye said a new mother needs sound mind and plenty of relaxation time to get over any complications post child birth.

And so, it does not necessarily matter ”how well she eats or how much corn on the cob is chewed if she is stressed, the breastmilk won’t come”, the Doctor noted.

Dr. Mantebea Boye noted that mothers chose corn and groundnut perhaps because of the relaxation that comes with it when they are chewing it. She added that she believes when new mothers chew corn and groundnut, they are likely to be thirsty and will drink a lot of water to help in the breastmilk production.
