The Volta Regional Health Directorate has launched its 7th national vaccination campaign against COVID-19, to be undertaken from Wednesday, July 19 to Sunday, July 23, to ensure that the majority of citizens in the region are vaccinated against the virus.

Statistics indicate that 402,000 individuals, representing 40.6 percent of the total population of 1,387,537, are fully vaccinated. The Volta Regional Acting Director of Health Services, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, said the figures do not befit a region that is known for exploits in the health sector.

A total of over one thousand health workers and volunteers have been deployed to carry out the exercise in all health facilities and designated centres across the Volta Region. The Volta Regional Acting Director of Health, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, said the target is to vaccinate about 53,134 adults who will be taking the COVID-19 vaccine for the first time.

He urged people aged 15 and above who are yet to receive the first dose, the second dose, or the booster to avail themselves during the exercise. Dr. Djokoto also called for a deliberate effort to sustain preventive practices exhibited during the peak of the pandemic, such as regular hand washing under running water, good nutrition, regular exercise, and healthy behaviours such as availing oneself to be vaccinated to avert any future recurrence.

“The WHO declaration does not imply that the battle against the virus is done or over. The legacy we can hand over to the next generation is one that has made a habit out of preventive practices like hand washing, good nutrition, exercise, and good health-seeking behaviour like availing ourselves to support vaccination campaigns. Let us make a deliberate effort to sustain these interventions,” he said.

Dr. Djokoto called on the media and other relevant stakeholders to support and create awareness for the vaccination campaign.
