High powered military and police delegation visit ‘troubled’ Yendi after Friday clashes

There is uneasy calm in Yendi following Friday’s clashes in which at least sixteen people were said to be injured.

Radio Ghana correspondent in the Northern Region says life is returning to normalcy, but residents are still cautious.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Northern Region, DSP Yussif Tanko told the media in Yendi that fifteen persons have been arrested in connection with the clashes.

He said more security personnel have been brought in to beef up security in the Municipality.

He also confirmed the death of one person, while the number of injured persons now stand at 22.

Meanwhile, high powered delegation made up of the military and the police including the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), David Asante-Appeatu, Chief of the Defence Staff‎ ‎Lt. General Obed Akwa, Chief of Army Staff, Major General William Ayamdo, Deputy Director General of Operations Col. Michael Amoah Ayisi are in Yendi Municipality to assess the situation.

The IGP has assured the people of Yendi of adequate security ahead of the performance of the funeral of Yaa Na Yakubu Andani which begins on Sunday.

A source at the Yendi Municipal Hospital says several deaths were recorded but declined to mention the exact number of persons who died in the clash, but said several persons died from gunshot and cutlass wounds.

Adding that, the hospital was overwhelmed with the number of casualties and had to transfer some of the injured to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

It also emerged that some gun wielding youth managed to enter the hospital with their weapons but were rounded up by security personnel.

Calm has however, returned to the facility and healthcare delivery is ongoing.
