The Electoral Commission, EC, has set Tuesday May 23, 2023, as the date to hold the By-Election in the Kumawu Constituency following the death of the Member of Parliament, Philip Basoah in the Ashanti Region.

This is in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution.

The EC in a statement issued on Monday, 17th April, 2023 said the Commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates at the Sekyere Kwumawu District Office.

“The Nominations will be received at the Sekyere Kwumawu District Office of the Commission from 2nd May, 2023 between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day” the Statement said.

The Statement urges interested candidates to download the Nomination Forms from its website (www.ec.gov.gh) from 14th April to 5th May, 2023.

MODALITIES

The statement outlined some modalities on filing nomination forms.

“A prospective Candidate may personally deliver or cause to be delivered on his/her behalf by either the the Proposer or Seconder of his/her Nomination, the completed Nomination Forms to the Returning Officer at the Sekyere Kwumawu District Office of the Commission, on the dates and times slated above” the Statement said.

It further said Nomination forms for each candidate “shall be witnessed by the signature or mark of two registered voters, as Proposer and Seconder, and supported by eighteen other registered voters in the Constituency as assenting to the Nominations.”

The Nomination Forms according to the EC, must also be endorsed with the candidates consent to the nomination.

“A Candidate shall at the time of submitting his/her completed Nomination Forms, provide the Returning Officer with tow (2) copies of recent post card (bust sized) photograph against a red background showing his/her full face and ear” the Statement noted.

Filing fee for the election has been pegged at ten thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢10,000.00) per candidate.

Mr Basoah died on Monday, March 27, 2023 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He was 54 years.
