The mortal remains of Ghana soccer star Christian Atsu have arrived in Ghana for burial.
His remains arrived at the Kotoka International Airport at about 7:40 p.m. on Sunday aboard a Turkish flight amid sombre moments.
The plane taxied to the VIP lounge where government officials, the military, relatives, football fraternity, media, sympathizers, and wellwishers were stationed.
“It’s a sad day”
Touching on his legacy, Vice President Bawumia said Christian Atsu was much loved and would be missed. On behalf of the President, he extended government’s condolences to the Twasam Family and the football fraternity for the loss.
“It is a very sad day that we are here to receive the mortal remains of our brother, our son, our husband, and our uncle. The tragedy that occurred in Turkey about a week ago was devastating, and we anxiously and nervously prayed that our brother Christian Atsu would be found alive.
Every day that passed, we hoped against hope. We prayed and prayed, but at last, when he was found, he was no more.”

In an address, Christian Atsu’s family expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their support after the devastating earthquake.
“On behalf of the Twasam Family of Ada and on my own behalf as the elder of the family, I’m giving thanks to the government of Ghana for the work they have done to bring the mortal remains of our dear son into Ghana. We also thank every Ghanaian that has contributed since this thing happened until today. We are grateful. We are saying we thank you.”
Christian Atsu was reported missing following the earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday, February 6.
Twelve days later he was found but confirmed dead. The Black Stars player left behind a wife and three children.
