The Public Works Department has presented a proposed architectural design for a model shelter facility to the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection as part of efforts to strengthen care and protection systems for vulnerable groups.

The presentation forms part of ongoing consultations towards the development of a modern, purpose-built shelter in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to enhance social protection and gender-based violence infrastructure in the country.

Officials from the Public Works Department explained that the facility is intended to provide a safe, secure and dignified environment for women, children and other vulnerable groups, including victims of trafficking and abuse.

The proposed design features separate residential blocks for adult males, adult females and children, as well as a dedicated children’s play area. It also includes a central kitchen facility to serve the entire shelter, alongside designated storage spaces to support effective food management.

The plan further incorporates a mini clinic expected to provide treatment and recovery services to meet the health needs of residents.

According to the technical team, the facility will comprise a mix of single-storey and two-storey structures designed with functionality, accessibility and safety in mind, including provisions for persons living with disabilities.

Discussions during the presentation highlighted the need for a “one-stop centre” approach, where essential services such as medical care, psychosocial support and case management are provided at one location. The approach is expected to ease the burden on victims who would otherwise have to move between multiple service providers.

The team noted that, drawing from both local and international best practices, the proposed facility has the potential to become one of the first comprehensive shelters of its kind in West Africa due to its integrated design and service delivery model.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, together with her technical advisors, welcomed the proposal and offered recommendations on key areas of the design.
