Policy and Advocacy Manager at Youth Empowerment Synergy, Obaa Akua Konadu, has advocated the adoption of a multi faceted approach to achieving the SDGs.
She noted that though integration of the SDGs into the schools curriculum is commendable, the adoption of new strategies such as engaging children in a more practical manner could propel the attainment of the goals by Ghana.
She made the observation at a day’s sensitization program on the SDGs, by the Ghana Civil Society Organizations, CSOs Platform on the Sustainable Development Goals for students in Accra.
The event was to sensitize students to be abreast of the goals of the SDGs at a young age.
Schools visited included Kinbu Senior High and Technical school as well as ‘Wisdom Ways Academy’ both in the Greater Accra Region.
The program was to whip up interest in the SDGs in children, to generate conversations around it.
Madam Konadu said the SDGS are about growth and well being of the people and this must not be left to government alone.
The Education Director of ‘Wisdom Ways Academy’ Solomon Yamoah, said targets of the SDGs revolves around issues that affect everyone and called for more public engagements.
Majority of the students said prior to the programme, they did not know anything about the SDGs, adding that the program had been educative.
The Ghana Civil Society Organizations, CSOs Platform on the Sustainable Development Goal’s SDGs, are championing the advocacy as part of the Global Week of Action on the SDGs.
The Sustainable Development Goals SDGs are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
The goals include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being and Quality Education.
The rest are Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth as well as Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
The other goals are Reducing Inequality, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production and Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life On Land Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and Partnerships for the Goals.
The SDGs which is expected to come to an end in 2030 would have eleven more additional years to achieve the targets.
