The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has raised concerns about what it describes as a complete disregard of the COVID-19 protocols by political parties in their campaign activities.

For this reason, Chairperson of the Commission, Josephine Nkrumah, has called on the leadership of political parties to encourage their supporters to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols as a means of minimizing exposure to the pandemic.

This will help prevent a second wave of infections, as regions which had zero cases have now reported some infections.

Madam Nkrumah made this known at a joint Media briefing with the Ghana Medical Association in Accra.

Leadership of the NCCE and the Ghana Medical Association made separate calls to the GPRTU and the security agencies to enforce the mandatory wearing of masks in commercial vehicles as contained in the Executive Instrument, EI 164, in relation to COVID-19.

This according to the two institutions is the only way to ensure that the successes chalked up in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic do not go waste.

Chairperson of the NCCE, Madam Josephine Nkrumah said enough resources have been committed to the fight against COVID-19 hence it cannot fail.

“Observations by the NCCE and GMA indicates that politicians and their followers have disregard the safety protocols and this has further emboldened citizens to give up on the country’s collective fight against COVID-19. The current public and national complacency and indifference to the COVID-19 safety precautions among Ghanaians is a danger that can derail the successes we have chalked in the fight against COVID-19”.

President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Frank Ankobea said without a vaccine, the only means of fighting the pandemic is to adhere to the safety protocols.

The NCCE expressed gratitude to managers of the COVID-19 relief fund for assisting the Commission in its education and sensitization agenda.
