The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has denied reports that he has granted MP for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo permission to absent herself from the House. The Constitution and the Standing Orders forbid MPs from being absent for more than 15 sittings in a meeting without written permission from the Speaker or to vacate their seats.

Madam Safo has been absent from all the 19 sittings so far since meetings of the Second Session of the 8th Parliament commenced on the 25th of January, 2022.

As a result, there are calls for the Constitution and the Standing Orders to be triggered to declare the seat vacant.

However, this morning, news went viral on social media that the Speaker in an interview had disclosed granting Madam Adwoa Safo permission to be absent from Parliament on health grounds.

The Speaker told MPs on the floor that there is no truth in the report and promised to fully address the issue in his formal communication to the House on Friday, February 25, 2022.
